My grandpa died a couple months ago. He was in the Army and served in Korea. Apparently he had wanted a flag folded and put in a display case and have it given to one of my uncles.

I don't know the etiquette for it, but it seems like that's what my grandpa wanted. Folded and displayed in one of my uncle's house. That's good enough for me if that's what he wanted.

It usually isn’t done but no rule against it. I wouldn’t just because it will get weathered. I’d put it in a display case made for the flag folded from coffins.

It’s actually something pretty cool our government does because I’m not sure if my family contacted them or not. Doesn’t seem like something my mom would have done but they were there for his funeral.

Just go buy a nice one from Harbor Freight for $16 or whatever and keep that one intact.

I have my father’s flag in a display case along with the 21 spent shell casings from the “21 gun salute” at his funeral.

I have just received my grandfathers burial flag from when he passed in WWII in the Navy. He is the sole reason I myself joined the Navy in 92. It is cloth and when I unfolded it, it had never been unfolded before, it was a 9x5 with only 48 stars. I was planning on hanging in my house, but don’t have a wall big enough.
I plan on giving it to my brother so he can hang it in his office at our family business. But I want to build a wood case with a glass front.
I under no circumstances would ever fly a burial flag outside, especially the old cloth ones. It is something you want to keep in the family for years to come and pass down to generations to come. If you fly it outside, it will shoemrten it’s life greatly.
Just my opinion of course.

Have my grandfather’s flag in a case and his dog tags from WW2 taped on the back of the case. Very so often you touch those and realize the history and where those seemingly insignificant pieces of metal had traveled to and it gives you some perspective…especially in this shite show we live in today.

On a side note.. I just saw a flag disposal box at the entrance to my Home Depot if anyone needs a place to retire flags. I have a couple that are worn, and I haven't seen much from Boy Scouts lately.

Local VFW’s usually do a flag retirement ceremony once or twice a year.

The LCH Avenue of Flags is hard work put on by local Scouts, clubs, vets and volunteers. put all the flags out in the morning and take them all down and fold them in the afternoon on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

It would be a shame if you flew your dads funeral flag and someone like gadknat or Oweo swiped it and burned it in one of their anti-American protests.

We took my grandfather's flag after he passed and put it in a display box made for folded flags. It is the only way to display it IMO. We have it sitting on top of the mantle at my grandmothers house.

I would not fly it, only display it in a case made for folded flags.

Funeral home did it for your family. Made contact that is. Every veteran has that right.

Once it’s folded, it’s retired. Get another flag to fly and proudly display the one you got for your dad.

I'm wondering would it be considered acceptable to fly the flag? Or would you leave it folded in its pouch?

It is your flag. The proper display for a flag like this, in my opinion, is a shadow box with some commemoration for the veteran, however modest (final rank, branch of service, dates, etc.)

If you fly the flag, inside, properly, the flag will likely last for decades. If you fly it outside, it will be consumed by the elements.

Your flag, your call.

It’s your flag. If you want to fly it, fly it.

No. Buy a flag at your local Lowe's and fly it. Quit being lazy. That flag for your father is exactly that, for your father. Have some respect.

We (Boy Scouts) are still retiring flags. It is usually a pretty good ceremony.

I’ve never thought about that.

I have my grandpas ww1 48 Star wrapped in plastic and my dads ww2 flags was in plastic.
I’d never consider unwrapping those for flying.
