The Muslims were beaten back and hopelessly backward compared to the European powers in terms of war, by the 1700s. It was the world wars that have reopened the present invasion. So I'd say it's the Muslim infiltration of the past 50 years and currently continuing that is the big event.

Ignacy Hryniewiecki might be a candidate. He assassinated Tsar Alexander II in 1881 and was hanged. He didn't live in the 20th century, but that century would have been very, very different (and most likely in a positive way) had it not been for him. Russia would have become a constitutional monarchy.
