You should have coated it when it was shiny and copper colored.

Is there any painting/picture of the Statue of Liberty actually copper colored? Here is a mock up

Here is a touched up photo in 1880 that shoes the original color

I wonder what the Statue of Liberty would be worth in scrap metal these days?

That is putting it lightly.

Imagine how bright that copper statue would have been. Would have been cool to see in the late 1800s

According to the Internet, the copper in the statue weighs 62,000 lbs. So at $2.19 a pound, that gives you $135,780.

60,000 pounds of copper @ $1.50 per pound for No. 3 roofing copper is $90,000
250,000 pounds of steel @ $.045 per pound for scrap steel is $11,250
So a little over $100,000 in scrap metal prices. Something tells me people would guess much, much higher than that, and I know for a fact someone would try to haggle for more than that at their local metal recycling facility.

On the upper limit of copper prices for scrap, especially for roofing copper.
Regardless, it is safe to say the statue is worth more in place than it is in scrap.

I would have definitely guessed higher. That's not worth the demo contract... I guess it can stay.

Yeah, I just searched "price of copper"

Those "workmen" in the photo look suspiciously like carved wooden figures to me, and the photo looks suspiciously like a museum diorama.

Yeah, it does, but calling it a "touch up" when it is a full-color photo from the 1800s is an understatement. For the record, I love when they do that to old photos.

Yes indeed.

You were in the ballpark, and I don't think anyone is going to fault you for being slightly off on your quote for the scrap value of the Statue of Liberty.
