It all depends on what part of the country and if it is installed correctly. I moved to a neighborhood 2 years ago in Houston and every house was built with one. We had nothing but problems with our unit as have ever home owner in the neighborhood.
I ripped ours out and installed a conventional unit.

How is it net zero
Net Zero means is generates all the energy it uses and takes nothing from the grid.
I do energy ratings for a living and see houses that have a 0 or negative energy use all the time

As in it could be entirely off the grid and everything would work? What are those houses using to get that rating?

That’s not an easy change, I’d be curious how deep they were drilled and how many wells you had.
DIYing would be nearly impossible in a vertical well. 300’ deep per hole.

Net zero = Net worth zero

I have been extremely happy with mine. We have 3 wells, 350 ft. Deep. My wife keeps it at 68 degrees year round, and it keeps up. Full disclosure, we also have foam insulation and double-pane windows which also helps tremendously. It is more expensive initially, but with federal and local tax credits, it all equaled out.
