I have two XV-21 Neato's for my first floor, and they do work great. I used to have a first edition Roomba many years ago, and I was never impressed.

The Neato actually maps out your house with a laser so that it knows where to go, instead of the random patterns the Roomba takes. I absolutely love the Neato. The XV-21 was specifically designed for pet hair too.

Also the random walk cleaning pattern seems a lot less efficient than the Neato's lawn mower pattern.

It is. The Neato actually has a built in laser that maps the areas and remembers where to go. Roomba's are just random patterns.

I can't imagine these working better than a regular vacuum.

They definitely don't have the same suction power, but for spot cleaning pet hair they work really good. I was skeptical at first too, but now I'll never go without one.

Well you don't have to push them so they have that going for them and they get to places that a regular vacuum won't.

I swear you could sweep, vacuum, and mop your floors... then turn on the Roomba and that fricker would still fill up with dust. It's amazing how much dirt/dust that thing can find.

we have one.. if you have pets that shed its worth every penny.

If you have a dog that will occasionally take a dump on the floor from time to time while you are gone, then avoid the roomba like the plague.

A buddy of mine came home to a trail of dog shite spread all over his living room and dining room floors after his roomba drug the shite all over the place

This has been a fear of mine. Luckily, I've not experienced it yet.

Do people still have dogs that do this in their homes? My God, buy a doggie door first. If you don't have a fence, install an invisible fence system. Put dog food outside as well...profit.

This bugs the hell out of me when I go to someone's house and their pet has ruined their home.

I checked BBB website and it shows the Neato being $200 cheaper and the reviews aren't nearly as good as the new Roomba.

That's just the way it works. It heads off in some direction until it runs into something and then turns around and heads off in another random direction. Eventually, the entire floor gets vacuumed. Maybe.

The Neato, as has been mentioned, has a laser that maps the room. It goes around the perimeter of the room first, then goes back and forth like a lawnmower until the room is done. Then it moves on to the next room and does the same thing. When the battery gets low, it returns to its charging station, charges up the battery and then picks up right where it left off.

ETA: it's possible that the newer Roombas are better. I haven't used one in a few years.

I think they range from under $200 to about $450.

I think Best Buy has them for $429, but if you search Amazon, they are listed for around $335 and Best Buy will price match it.
