the reviews aren't nearly as good as the new Roomba.

Specifically, the XV-21 is the one I'm talking about. I've never had a single issue with mine, and for dog hair, they killed my Roomba.

That's just the way it works. It heads off in some direction until it runs into something and then turns around and heads off in another random direction. Eventually, the entire floor gets vacuumed. Maybe.

The randomness helps in ways that the neato cannot overcome. By being random, it can catch things it missed or that were blown out of the way during another pass. If that happens on a neato, and the particles land in an area that was already passed over, it won't be picked up.

There are benefits. Don't think they haven't thought of this before we did, lol

I am in the same exact boat as you. I am in need of a robotic vacuum and can't decide which one . I want the neato but the reviews are not impressive on the new ones. I'm hoping it's just a first production run type thing but I'm waiting to see

Valid point. Another thing that the Roomba does (not sure if the Neato does or not) is that if it encounters a particularly dirty patch, it will stop and do a spot clean of that area before resuming its random pattern.
