I'll take a stab...
It's like taking your house and flipping it on it's roof, then turning it back over. The roof design wasn't built to support the weight of the house wall, floor, etc. structure and could suddenly collapse on the structure without any indication, killing all sleeping inhabitants.
Tell me if this made any sense. It's the first thing that I thought.

Sounds like they went inverted and started to lose altitude and recovered. In the process, force well beyond the design limits were put onto the air frame and wings, causing catastrophic damage. Probably bent some things and lost some important parts to the point where they aren't comfortable using it in combat, and the cost to repair it is higher than replacing it.
Imaging taking your car and dropping it onto it's roof, then turning it over and cranking it up. It may run and it may even be able to move under it's own power...but the roof is smashed, the windows are broken, the frame is bent and it certainly isn't safe to actually use. It's now a heap of crap that's useful only for parts.

Flew in one from Bahrain to Damman, Saudi Arabia, but it was converted to fly passengers so no jump seats.
