International Travel Advice (Panama City, Panama)

I'll be traveling outside the country for the first time in March. I'm going to Panama for a study abroad trip to the Panama Canal (yeah I've seen the mosquito zika virus posted). I'm going 2 days early to get drunk and be a tourist before I have to do academic stuff.
Any tips for being a tourist or visiting Panama in general?
My plans are to stay at a hotel with a casino, gamble, drink and maybe hit the beach during the day.
Thanks

Just got back from Panama. The canal is alright. I'd spend as little time there as possible. The best beaches are outside of Panama City. Too far to travel to if you're only there for 2 days. The Hard Rock is the best casino there. We went to just about all of them.
And take uber everywhere. Dirt cheap and not sketchy.

We did a one day tour on a bus. Stopped at different spots and went to a lock station of the canal. The lock was very interesting.

Panama City looks like a surprisingly big city

I'll be at the City of Knowledge for the next 6 days to study the canal and the watershed.

Beaches in the city aren't that great. I'd recommend taking a quick flight from Albrook airport or a ferry to one of the islands just off the coast. The Casco Vijeo (Old Town) is a cool place to check out.

It's a big city. Good time and pretty damn inexpensive. Spent $600-700 for 8 days including flight/hotel.

$300 RT spirit from Miami in December. December is the most expensive time of the year for flights to South/Central America.
Had zero complaints about spirit.

$300 RT flight. $40/night for a hotel in a casino (got a great deal) split between two. So $20/night. If we didn't make a trip to the San Blas mountains it would have been ~$550 total.

Hang out at Hard Rock then go to Elite after hours. Smokin Columbian girls.

shite, you can fly to Bangkok for $500 and spend $50 a night on hotel and it not be a shithole (Lux hotels in Bangkok are routinely sub $100). Can fly down to Phuket on Air Asia for like $20. Take ferry and you're on an island.
Just got to take advantage of deals when they show up.

They use US currency, and a lot of US money is kept offshore there. So it makes sense

This.
Speaking of which, I need to find a cheap way to get to Cambodia in May. I'm going to have to hit you up

Honestly your best bet is probably flying via Bangkok.
Maybe its because no one is advertising deals to Phnom Penh or anything, but I routinely see deals to Bangkok a few times a year.
Then just catch flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap if that is where you are going.
Maybe if you get lucky, Asiana has a flight from ICN to REP, so put an alert for that routing as that is one less flight to take.

I'm thinking that's the best option. How expensive do you think the flights from Bangkok to Cambodia are?
