An African virus that historically rarely infected people is spreading in the Americas, apparently causing the babies of infected mothers to be born with deformed heads. The Zika virus is carried by mosquitoes and spreads when the insects bite. And though it appeared in the Americas just nine months ago in the Easter Islands off Chile, the World Health Organization said it will soon spread to almost all countries in the Americas, including to the United States.

Zika, nature's incredibly cruel birth control.

Is this similar to West Nile? Milder, Worse?

AFAIK West Nile didn't make the women carrying it either miscarriage or deliver deformed babies. I am no doctor though.
The thing I would be concerned about would be the places where mosquitos can bite almost year round, like the south. If this gets going here, you'll see a drop off in births because of it.

In most people it causes no or very mild symptoms. But it's associated with the rare birth defect in the OP.

quote:The link between Zika and micocephaly is not confirmed at all. Brazil is a poor country with terrible medical practice. Before the outbreak, they document that they have 150 cases of microcephaly a year. The US documents 25,000. Experts are reporting there is a good chance that Brazil is noticing "increased" numbers because they are actually documenting such cases
On Friday, an international team of researchers reported results from tests on 35 babies born in Brazil with microcephaly and said tests showed they were not infected with anything else.
