I knew 2 industrial engineer majors at State. One went to work for a company that specialized in furniture factory designs/refurbs/construction and the other for a large construction company.

Hey 7thWardTiger,

A few of my friends from high school got industrial technology degrees from ULL. They started off as operators on offshore rigs and one of them is now an operations manager. You won't have an "engineering" title but you could easily make six figures and move into a sales or manager role later on.

Hope this helps.

How do you come up with degree programs you know nothing about.

You should at least have an interest in the type of engineering you go into.

I'm about to graduate in Industrial Technology from ULL

A lot of the classes are in technical specialties.. Like Fluid Power, Electronics, CAD, Networking, etc.

Then almost all of the non major requirements are business classes (ACCT, Management, BLAW, Finance).

Can't tell you what the degree specializes in.. But it's very broad, and I think that's a good thing.

I graduated from ULL with an ITEC degree. I'm currently a project manager in the oil and gas industry. Either one is better than an art degree, just compare the curriculums to see what interests you more. Chances are when you graduate you won't end up doing what you thought in the first place.

Industrial isn't a real engineering degree. I honestly have no idea what an industrial engineer does.

Yea, you're completely wrong. I have an IE degree from Texas Tech.

I had to take the same prerequisites as any other engineer, besides ChemE. I had to take Physics 1 &2, Chem, Calc 1, 2, 3, DiffEQ, and others. Also, since IE is a broad engineering degree, I was required to take at least one class from almost every other engineering discipline.

As for what an IE does, really they can do anything. We like to say we are the science behind business. Some things that you can do are QC at a manufacturing facility, a manufacture engineer, engineering sales, safety, field engineering, and even business processes.

An IEs average starting salary is around $62,000 per year out of college, but the good thing about IE is that they get promoted quickly and usually are placed in the business side of a company, which is why you see them in managerial roles.

An engineering degree is always going to be better than a tech degree. It will open more doors for you in the end.
