You do realize this was damn near a decade ago and that shite apt was a temp situation. Pretty sure they were doing work on a near by sister complex and being housed for free.

After them had a long string of white trash before I got the frick out of there... again. They were the best neighbors I had there

I won’t pretend to know the geopolitical climate of surrounding countries for Iraqi refugees at the time, nor their own processes. Perhaps there were barriers.

I never met the parents to ask about it, just the kids once they grew up. I know they lived under the radar for awhile in each of Syria, Turkey, and Greece before the U.S. I think the decision just boiled down to two things:

1. There were relatives in the States already (parental siblings if memory serves)
2. Many peoples of the world in such situations have long viewed America as the land of opportunity.

Coming here SHOULD be a hard, lengthy process involving sacrifice.
