You do realize this was damn near a decade ago and that shite apt was a temp situation. Pretty sure they were doing work on a near by sister complex and being housed for free.

I won’t pretend to know the geopolitical climate of surrounding countries for Iraqi refugees at the time, nor their own processes. Perhaps there were barriers.
I never met the parents to ask about it, just the kids once they grew up. I know they lived under the radar for awhile in each of Syria, Turkey, and Greece before the U.S. I think the decision just boiled down to two things:
1. There were relatives in the States already (parental siblings if memory serves)
2. Many peoples of the world in such situations have long viewed America as the land of opportunity.
