Someone that is hot as frick and doesn't have $275 but has $23 a week.
They will likely pay until the end of August which would be just over $250 which is just a little less then the full retail cost.

They are quite prevalent in the Midwest/NE due to the fact that a lot of homes, especially older ones, don't have central AC.

Same people who split All You Can Eat deals? Same people who eat half their food and then send it back for a refund?

Well depending on the model they may come out ahead. Returning it at the end of summer that way they don’t have to deal with the thing when it craps out a month or two after the warranty expires and you need to buy another one.
But yes, 800 dollars for a sub 12,000 BTU window unit is insane. There should be usury laws that should kick in for rent to own products and initial prices should not exceed MSRP plus tax and document fees.

I have noticed a lot of homes in the NE have been going to mini-splits since they are so easy to do retrofit installs.
The exponential rise in the cost of central air units may hasten the shift to mini-splits in the US (prevalent in the ROTW) because they are cheaper per ton and have lots of upsides with minimal downsides save for aesthetics and some might argue noise.

This is a fine example of a risk premium.

When we lived in Wyoming we needed an AC about 5 days a year. We had window units in key rooms. So what?

Couldn't tell you how much I paid for them

Shoot, we didn't get our first window unit until '87. And we couldn't use it during the day. And only when it was extreme heat.
My son has a $200 portable unit in his room now because he thinks he is an Eskimo.
I wasn't knocking having them. Just people who would pay that much.

The same way any repossession is done. First, there is a legal component then the practical side. They simply show up and take it. There is a YouTube channel devoted to just repossessing portable sheds. The industry of rent to own has a cottage industry of repossession built up around it.

No. There are legal means to recover personal property like that, oddly most people just give it up once there is a court order.

People living poor, especially in a mobile home. Central unit going out in a mobile home is like living in an oven. You do what you have to do. I'm a poor and can relate.
