You had the dying off of the older generation and the baby boomer fleeing when the steel industry died off. There has been a huge move with the younger generation moving back to Pittsburgh.

Also, corporate is strong in the city....major employers who have a lot of employees...which means a solid tax foundation (solid public services and protection, schools, parks, etc)

Why would you be laughing at Pittsburgh? Have you ever been there? It's a great city. Scenically beautiful, economically stable, fun people, lots to do, affordable. I wouldn't mind at all living there.
