I'm so old that I had to have a RRTOP cert. when I started flying, I think it stood for restricted radiotelephone operator permit

bullshite. In the words of Yeager and Olds, the P-51 could do for 8 hours what the Spit could only do for two.

think he mentioned the legs in his post but I'd take the Stang, but not because of anything Yeager said

No question P51 Mustang

There used to be several parked on the ramp at the Jackson Hole airport. A few of the billionaires who lived up there had a flying club. I've always been partial to the P38 myself.

I've got some old F-4 buddies that own a restaurant/bar up there that were a part of that, couple of the dudes were smart and got out of the flying game

a lot of them are of the bottom of the GoM as target drones, a few of them are still flying, there's a place in Houston that sells rides in one for around ten grand

That am be, but the Spit was no more maneuverable then the Mustang, and the Mustang could do it for much, much longer.

OT, have you read "Fighter Pilot: The Memiors of Legendary Ace Robin Olds"? Great, great read on a remarkable man and pilot. Quite a bit in it about the P-51...

Yeah, that's a little above my pay grade. There was one down at Jax (F-4E) with the Blue Angels a few years ago.

I've the pleasure and honor of meeting and talking with General Olds on a couple of occasions. An absolute treasure. A fighter pilot's fighter pilot, a leader's leader, a great man and fun to be around. I don't know how he was able to fit those balls into a fight suit. Awesome man.

At my first job, one of the older guys there had been an alternate on the mission that took out Yamato. Nobody had mechanical trouble, so he got sent back before they made the final run in.
