depends on the state - not true in Louisiana. Debt brought into the marriage stays with the individual parties after divorce. Debt accrued during marriage is split between parties. However, if you refi or consolidate the debt after you get married (loans, mortgage, credit cards, etc) - you're now paying 50% of those bad decisions for her.
been there, bought t-shirt.

dated a couple of girls that had so many red flags in the first 6 months that I didn't need to check a credit score. Seriously, day-to-day you can get a picture of someone's decision making capacity that scales from "I just went in to get some lip gloss and they said if I spend over $100, I get 10% off my purchase." all the way up to "they said I could roll over the 36 months I still owe on my Rav 4 into the note on a new Tahoe".

No. Potential partner? I’d just ask.

If you plan on marrying her, absolutely.
I highly suggest it actually.

I would say it matters. I am a 30 year old gay guy and already know SEVERAL people that are divorced. If the ex had $100k in student loan debt and you married her, you now owe $50k of her debt

I would check how much debt she has with a credit report. If she is debt free or close to debt free, I don't care what credit 'score' she has because we are not planning to 'borrow' any money from the bank.
Credit score is not an indicator of financial health. I already have a house/mortgage, I will not borrow money and be a slave for anything else.

In a serious relationship you should know someone well enough to guess their credit score within 100 points. If they're enough of a disaster to be an issue you should pick up on that without seeing the report.

Not a bad idea. A good friend of mine married a girl with 20k in credit card and student loan debt. He had no idea until a couple of months after the wedding.
