It cools because the pressure/density is lower. Pressure and temperature are directly proportional. The composition of the air also plays a factor. The lighter air molecules tend to be higher than the heavier ones.

Pretty much this.
The UV light splits the O2 into 2 O. A free O, will react with pretty much anything. The ozone also will be split up by particular wavelengths of light, make O2 + O, then quickly reform ozone and give off heat. Then form two O2s when it runs into any free O floating about.
The UV light -> heat warms the atmosphere, and keeps the nastiest of the sun's rays from getting through.

Can the ozone layer and its cyclic daily behavior with UV be attributed to the change in the temperature gradient from the troposphere to the stratosphere?

Water vapor does, because it changes phases while rising and lets off heat while doing it.
The rest of it, doesn't make much of a difference. The O2 and N2 dwarf anything else.

The answer is that hot air will still cool quickly. In normal atmospheric conditions every 1000 feet equals a 3.5 degree decrease in ambient temperature. As the ambient air cools, so does the warm air rising.

The reaction cycle its self, no.
The warm over cold keeps the layer stable though, not mixing vertically. So the concentrations stay the same at a given height.

Hot air rises because it is in an expanded state due to the thermal energy. The altitude of the balloon is controlled by the amount of heat/energy input. Snow on the top of the mountain is the result of thinner air and cooler temps. Air is a compressible fluid, so think about the balloon floating in a fluid of its own density where the air above is less dense and the air below is more dense.

It wouldn't rise in that case, just stay put.
The hot air balloon is probably a better way to put it. The air in that balloon is warmer and isn't as dense. So it rises.

Heat comes from molecules bumping into each other. Air at sea level has a lot more molecules per square foot than air at the top of a mountain. More molecules means more collision of molecules thus warmer air.
Warm air will rise and then expand and cool. It coolw because the same amount of molecules spread out and collide less.
