Why don’t folks from Southern states (especially the southern states who participated) get just as excited about the Revolutionary War as they do the Civil?

1) It was a better cause.
2) They actually won.

After researching my ancestry, I was a lot more excited to find that I had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary. Still very interested in my ancestors who fought in the Civil.

We do, there are American flags all over the place in the south and we celebrate 4th of July as well as anyone, maybe except NYC. Hell I’m outside and I see 2 US flags now, one on a car and one on a house. Revolutionary War is awesome and I love reading about, Civil War has pictures though

Do people retire "up North"? No they retire 'down south' so yes, it is great here. Gee, maybe a person would sacrifice to live up north for a job??? Hell if I know

Considering making a spin-off thread about the Texas flag. It makes me want to vomit seeing it every 5 feet here. But hey, I'm the transplant I guess.

The founding fathers ideals of America (states rights and a limited government plus an agrarian society) died after the Civil war.

Affirmative action and black peoples high use of welfare might contribute a small amount to poor whites failures but anybody trying to suggest they are a significant part is just dumb imo. And no, I honestly can’t say I’ve ever heard somebody think these are the main problems with America. But I don’t live in “the real south” so I’m sure y’all aren’t wrong.

It's an attitude that I've adopted at my age. Keeps me from being offended all the time. The statues, the flag never bothered me, and If I could be completely honest, race pimps use it to get votes. It bothers me that so much money was wasted taking down statues in New Orleans. On the list of things I'm worried about when I visit Nola, the statues weren't one of them.

Woke like a muthafricka.

Be honest.

Ahhh, I see.

So what you're saying is, it's like the black lives matter t-shirt for white people.

This issue isn't rocket science. People in the South have a unique culture and identity. The Confederate flag is a historical representation of the South and it looks cool. Wala. So depending on the individual context, the flag can be displayed for any number of reasons. Many (most) of which have nothing to do with supporting slavery. But some people prefer obtuse black and white (pun intended) narratives.

The war was a profoundly tragic experience for the south. The death toll, the physical destruction. Everyone was effected. That was not true of the revolution, where a much smaller percentage of the population participated, and where the wounds were not particularly deep.

quote:

They actually won.

When you win something you celebrate, and you move on.

When you lose, you tend to hang on to that defeat.

And the shared sacrifice we made bound us together, cementing a sense of southern nationalism.
