This is generally true. I've found that:
a) most people only want to talk, not engage in an actual two-way conversation
b) most people confuse waiting for their turn to talk with actual listening
When this happens (and it always does), I get up and get a fresh drink or some fresh air.

The worst is when you realize no participant is actually listening to anyone else, and everyone is just waiting for their turn to indulge themselves.

There is a married couple in my friends circle that are the absolute worst at telling stories. Without fail, they will try to talk over each other and then argue over minutiae that makes no difference in the story whatsoever.

Yeah, I don’t get it. Sometimes I feel like I need to write down the topic so we can stay on it. Within five minutes we can be talking about parenting, politics, and the universe. I will try to segue back to the topic.
