Yea i live in that area too, great spot. BR is lacking for sure, but there are new places opening (crsipy catch building becoming a restaurant/bar, uncle earls upgrading, the red stick social/electric depot on government). And downtown or Lauberge are always a good time. I go out much less now that i'm not single anymore, but i feel theres plenty to do.

I believe if Kip Holden had about 10 more years he could have made a difference in Baton Rouge. The group running the joint now is scary.
The biggest difference is that Holden avoided playing the racial politics game. He surrounded himself with people who knew how to get things done. He recognized the importance of revitalizing downtown and the Mid City area. He made some mistakes, but by and large, he did a lot of good for the city of Baton Rouge.
The group down at city hall now is an absolute clown show. You have a racist, incompetent mayor and a Metro Council that can't get a damn thing done because certain members hijack every meeting with, you guessed it, racial politics.

Mid city and DT are doing pretty well. What was he able to do to allow growth happen?

I hated living in BR until I moved to the Overpass area. Decent bars and restaurants in walking distance, and easy access to everything along Perkins. I still think this city is lacking for people 24-35 ish but it's a decent place to be for a few years. Seems like there are only really a handful of bars that people go to, (Ivars, Bulldog, Happys, Radio Bar, etc.) and outside of football season, the city is kind of dead on the weekends.
Agree 100%. BRs biggest problem is that it cannot retain LSU grads. Many go to other cities to gain experience and make better money then come back later in life to be with family and enjoy the lower cost of living.... I like to think it is getting better, but its hard to tell. I think mid-city and downtown redevelopment will help alot with keeping young people around, but there still needs to be more economic development. We need more good, well paying, entry level jobs that you find in New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Nashville and Atlanta.

I understand when people talk that way about Jackson or Montgomery.
Or Beaumont or Sheveport.....
But I agree that Baton Rouge is a perfectly pleasant place. I wish there were more white collar jobs and better infrastructure.
The people are friendly and the food is great.

New Orleans (and all Louisiana cities) have a major problem with white collar job growth.
Even Memphis is curb stomping us in that area right now.

I lived there for 12 years and agree BRLA has potential. Improving the infrastructure would be the best place to start. It always seemed to me as though as they built more stuff they put in no requirements for improvements. A problem with BRLA is that nobody wants to pay for anything and the public corruption ruled the day. I still think BR is salvageable, but no way would I ever want to live out in East Ascension or wherever down I-10 everyone seems to be moving to the last 10 years. Wouldn’t want to live in Zachary either.
