[/img]Who should I call to come take a look at and possibly redesign an outdoor kitchen exhaust problem? I have a grill on the back porch that is covered by the house roof. I put in a 1200 cubic feet per minute exhaust fan (2 blowers), but it is still not enough to capture all of the smoke when I am grilling something that produces a lot of smoke. I may need a larger exhaust. I may need to bust out the stucco above the grill and pull the exhaust fan out a little ways to capture the smoke that rolls out the front of the grill when I open the lid. What type of person/company could tell me exactly what I would need to do?

Right above the grill is an area about 8' wide and 2' deep. There is a 48" exhaust fan over the 36" grill.

1200 seems like enough to me. I have a similar set up and not had a problem handling the smoke.

How straight is the the vent run? What diameter is the vent duct? Something must be restricting the air flow.

is the problem smoke not getting sucked out of the vent areas or smoke not making it into the vent area and rising to the top of the high ceiling?

It is an 8" vent running straight up through the ceiling and out the roof. No turns.

Both actually. When I open the grill, the smoke rolls out of the front and the vent doesn't catch it.

When the lid is closed, it catches most of the smoke, but not all.

is the smoke that gets into the "vent area" sucked out as you would want?

What are you grilling that produces so much smoke?

Most, but not all. Because this shares a roof with my house, the smoke that it doesn't catch goes up through the ceiling and into the attic. I can then smell it upstairs.

I would get your contractor/builder to come back and rectify his mistake. Not for free but he should help you out some. This should have been addressed in the design phase. They are going to have to cut that stucco wall about halfway up and angle it so it comes out farther. Possibly go with a stainless hood instead of stucco but I am no designer - architect. You need someone who can make it look right.
