Kansas City should be the capital of the mid west because it has Kansas in it.

How is Kentucky not considered mid west according to this map?

Maps have very little to do with the region names in present day. In reality Kentucky is a buffer zone between the southeast and Midwest. It’s mostly southern but has some striking similarities with the Midwest. It’s like 80% southern 20% Midwest

Missouri has this going on too. It’s mostly midwestern but has some southern flare mixed in there. Missouri is like 80% Midwest 20% southern.

This thread has yet to mention the forgotten subregion that is The Great Plains. ND, SD, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, about half of Texas, then slivers of Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

This region definitely is NOT Midwest. It’s mostly wide open grasslands with sparse forests. Farms and ranches as far as the eye can see. Other nicknames for this region are “heartland” or “mid-America”. Mid-America is a good one because the geographical center of the lower 48 is in Lebanon KS.

Very few associate Colorado Wyoming and Montana with any region other than the mountain west/rockies but go look. It’s great plains just like the other states listed.
