quote:well one , the weight station for what seems like an eternity has a half constructed weight station that has never been finished. So no one is weighed coming into Louisiana from Texas. Now going into Texas all the way Houston there are 2 stations, one near Vidor, but it isn't a weight station, it's a check point for what your carrying. Most of the time you drive right through it. Another one is about 20 miles from Mont belview. Again when lights are on you drive through it and state boys will pick and choose a truck to dot based on different reasons. It isn't a weight station either. As far as Louisiana scales, the one near Breaux Bridge works. When light flashes you must pull in and weigh however if your company has the technology on your truck, it gets weighed in motion(in the right lane) as you pass under the weigh station's transponder. You will get a red light or green light or no light. If you get a green light, the truck keeps rolling. Red light or no light, the truck has to pull in. That transponder scans your truck info and knows your BOL and everything about your cargo and it's weight. They know if your empty or not. Now if you dont carry the tech on board, your pulling in when they are open. I always weigh my loads when I leave with a new load, that way, I have a ticket showing proof of what I have in weight(esp if I pull into a weigh station) if a trooper pulls me over for dot purposes or if you pull into a weigh station illegal, that's a pretty hefty fine. Company ain't paying for it.
Serious question: How do some of your brother truckers avoid the scales on the LA/TX line on I 10?

. Here's one. I'm sure you're familiar with JB Hunt. Someone has hijacked my social, and according to the IRS, I worked for JB Hunt last year and made $80K. $15K was withheld. Are you familiar with any scams to provide payment to illegals in this industry using other's identities?

Even in this job , I get pissed because I'm used to a certain routine and when it get thrown off and you are stranded waiting for a load for half a day or you get to a dc andntheybdint have an empty to switch out or yiu have 4 hrnkeft at 8pm and the load won't be ready until 12am and you lose the hours and have to shut it down and wait.nyour in a slowdown for 1m5 hours waiting totally stopped. That shite drives me nuts esp when you just want enough time to get to a good truck stop for the night and your getting squeezed hard on time because some idiot got into a wreck.
I'm glad the OP has a good gig with an employer that's making him happy.
You wanna know how we as a society functions in the brain? Drive i10 for 5 months straight and then you'll realize how stupid people are in general everyday life. Their driving habits are the dead give away.
Patience in this job is required. Patience will keep you in this industry. If you dont have patience, try something else.

Maybe in the 60s/70s?
Actually at the Texas border I've seen women here and there walk away from the rest stop just walking with a sleeping bag or a blanket and say to myself, they must of been with a trucker and got dropped off

quote:on the pedal you get 68mph as your top speed but if you engage the interactive cruise system, it will give you 70mph. Some companies like mine have 65 on pedal and 68 for cruise control. The whole reason you can cruise faster is the technology behind the interactive cruise control that is actually safer than someone who drives using the pedal. The cruise control won't allow us to be closer than 350 ft from next vehicle or it will slow the their speed keeping us at 350ft. This is designed to keep us at a safe distance for breaking. Following distances for all vehicles is a huge problem in America and number one reason for accidents. If someone slams the brakes or cuts in front of us and isuddenly under 350ft away driving slow our interactive braking system kicks in and brakes us extremely hard and you foot isnt even on the brakes. It's an awesome add on to our trucks.
You've mentioned this several times but I'm not exactly sure what it means? Can you explain?

Nice thread baw. Thanks for sharing your experience.
How often do you sleep in the cab of your truck? Do you ever stay in a lodge / hotel? If you are on the road and want to go do something in the town you are in after you are done driving, do you take an uber and leave your truck at a truck stop?

quote:I usually sleep probably 3/4 days because I'll get pass throughs(bringing a load either way where I'm passing the town I'm from. So I'll stop and sleep at home. I'm off weekends or every other weekend(every other weekend will give me a 3.5 days off like a thurs evening to monday morning off)it just depends. I get like mentioned a couplemofnpass throughs a week so. There are many trucking jobs that pay well into 70s/80s where your home every night and off every weekend. Some jobs will also pay and make a 1k a week clear, home every night and off every weekend, get 2 weeks vacay days and you build your sick time and get 2.5 hrs added each pay check. That's a 60k job which are around every corner if you look around.

quote:we have terminals for our company, when I'm not coming home for that particular weekend my TS will try to run me near one so I can stay and most of our terminals have a hotel. If you pay 30 bucks , you get the room alone or free if you share a room. I'll pay the 30 easily for a room alone. 60 bucks for a sat/sun in order to get out of the truck is like a nice vaction and breakfast coffee is included. I've seen truckers pull into hotels right off the hwy and stay but I'm sure they pay not the company.
Do you ever stay in a lodge / hotel?
quote:good question. Yeah take an Uber but when we had what is called personal conveyance time on a weekend if you were taking your weekend rest at a truck stop you can use what is called personal conveyance that wasn't counted toward your clock and you can literally uncouple from your trailer(leave it locked in your stall)at a truck stop and just drive your tractor anywhere like a Walmart, movies, amusement park, concert whatever and do your thing and go back to truck stop after. PC isn't clock time so. If I had clock time left during the week and I was at a store the night before and delivery was 6am the next morning and I had 2 hrs left on clock, I'd park trailer behind store then drive to a planet fitness with just the tractor and workout and take a full shower inside, walk and go eat some where near. It's decently easy to bobtail(semi truck/tractor) pretty much anywhere. Then I'd go back to that said store, park, watch some TV and doze off till the morning. It's all pretty cool once you know what to do in any situation to make your routine work like you would be at home everyday but aren't.

Cool.....and I'm dating myself, but I had a family member who was in the Frozen Seafood business and he used to contract these independent types .....about 25 years ago and they would routinely have overweight going into Beaumont from NOLA area. They were never too concerned about it. Said there were back ways in. I never knew whare those were, but in MS going north, he one day showed me how shipments going to Memphis/Southaven could get around it.

quote:truckers are creative until you get stopped by a dot certified LEO. If you don't have papers on your weight and they make you follow them to weigh station, you screwed if your heavy or unbalanced. A good BOL without a weigh ticket from a cat scale could get you off possibly.

BOL ..means bill of lading. Has your cargo, hazardous if any, list of each piece of cargo, the company, destination, the weight of the cargo etc.
Most times you get checked is not for weight that much, they check to make sure your legal in all aspects like you license/physcial/drug test/ all of your trucks vitals, that the trailer is legal. For example, a trooper can pull you over and cite you for a missing mud flap on your trailer. The mud flap could have literally fell off during your drove, he still can wrote you or your company a violation. So yeah being legal law people want you to be more than checking your weight esp if yiu have a bol saying your legal in weight.
Once i got dot'd and my physical was getting close to having to being done again and the trooper alerted me to it thankfully. Once you give them your license, they pull you up and already see your physical and drug test online. If your out of date, ticket.

There are almost 100 questions posted throughout the thread but I'll answer
I don't see many except now that I remember one hoochie momma sitting at a Love's in Houston with her make up station out at a table trying to pretty up which to me was "impossible" and once in another state saw a van with 3 adult women get out dressed like hookers with short mini skirts walking the parking lot. That's it in about 5 yrs of work. I dont work for the most part anywhere north of i20. Our Company inservices us on sex trafficking esp with young people(I have yet to see this anywhere but they say it exist) and we have a 800 number on deck to call if we ever witness this type of stuff. I've never seen it. We are all over the country and we as an industry can make a difference with that type of stuff going on.
