You do know before lawyers saw such a rise in career choices your word and handshake did mean everything. Or is history just in the way for you?
Show me this being true. People didnt lie and welch on handshakes back then? Prove that.
Also, I'm sure slave traders shook hands after deals. Im sure Columbus' soldiers shook hands after deals between the times that they smashed native babies on rocks. Im sure snake oil salesman back in the day shook hands as they sold bullshite to desperate people.
Anybody who pontificates about how much better people were back in the day...is probably not a very good critical thinker.

A handshake was ironclad. Not anymore. Your word was your bond.
So your premise is nobody lied and cheated "back in the good old days"?

The majority of people certainly took personal oaths more seriously. We've become a litigious society bound more by law than honor.

Unsupported platitude from old guy.

I always figure that if someone will lie to me about something that isn't important.I just imagine what they're capable of.
Honesty is maybe the most important character asset.Without the foundation of honesty there can be no trust.

Disagree.
Not raping people is more important than honesty, in my humble opinion. But hey if you're OK with honest rapists then have at it.

Why is it so hard to do the right thing?
I seriously believe that the "right thing" and fundamental, objective truth has been largely discarded from our society. The reason for the dearth of individual character is that our dissemination of absolute truth has been replaced by subjective existential truth. It's hard to do the right thing when you are indoctrinated to avoid it. But you won't find that taught, talked about, or even preached about in our world today. The "right thing" and objective truth are altogether lost from society.

As a Christian, it is shocking how much it's changed. Especially in the south.

Values clarification. Movement away from objective to the subjective.
It's just easier to make the cognitive leap today because it's becoming programmed into us.

Experience can be, and often is, deceptive. When we're young and enthusiastic about life, things seem good and the future looks bright. Then as time goes on, and the future of the past becomes the present, the world usually doesn't live up to the expectations. It's not that the world has changed, it's your perception of the world that has changed.
Use your wisdom gained through experience to know when to listen to a new perspective.

Part of what this comes down to is that people tend to be naive when they were young. So when they get older and realize what a corrupt place the world is they think that the world has changed. They lack the self awareness to realize that the change is internal and not external. The truth is that in principle the world has always been this way.

Values clarification and an overly litigious society have moved "honor" into a secondary role. Everything is subjective unless it can be proven by law. The US is the most litigious society in the world.
Now, you can agree or disagree and that's fine. It's an observation based on years of experience and changing folkways in American society. Our values system has changed from trust to "prove it."
Would you say there's no probability in that?

this
Life has always been "solitary, nasty, brutish, and short," yet entitlement culture promotes a different (and wholly destructive) narrative.
