Most of the people I know that I consider men of character tend to think of themselves as incredibly flawed individuals who fail in these areas continuously. In other words, they would never publicly state they were a man of character, at best they would say the strive to be a man character and usually add the caveat that they often fail miserably.

Our character is much more than just our reputation, what we try to display for others to see. It is who we are even when no one is watching. Having a Good Character means doing the right thing just because it is right to do what is right.

is this a long, drawn out way to say that you're a good guy and never seem to get the girl. but some bad boy does?
do you wear fedoras?
do you wear fedoras?

In fact, I'd say that acknowledging your flaws is essential to having character.

I know I'm not perfect. Pride humility and forgiveness are not my strong traits. I won't ever be close to perfect but that won't stop me from trying

He also said

That would be a better way to present the scenario. The key, for me at least, is to aim for perfection and not let the fact that I will not likely achieve it to keep me from trying.
Good luck on the quest, it is a worthwhile one. Your character is who you are. Your reputation can be destroyed by other people, regardless of the truth. Your character can only be destroyed by you, regardless of any lies other people put forward.

How is it a lost quality if you have it? Are you saying no one has it? Are you saying more people back in the day had it? When was back in the day? Does that trend continue on a linear scale (i.e. the further back you go, the more character you find)? Is truthfulness, and the presence of values/convictions the only measure of character? Which values and convictions? And do you have any non-anecdotal evidence that those qualities as you define them exist in lower quantities (or is it percentages?) than at other times?
Basically, before you come out in public and preach, you should do actual research. Put in the work. Because while you may consider yourself a "man of character", if I were to judge you based on this post, you both lack humility and the ability to the work that would support your belief. That would make you lazy.

Also agreed.
I think what I was trying to express to the OP is that he could have presented the subject line a little differently.

A handshake was ironclad. Not anymore. Your word was your bond. Yes I do believe it is a linear scales that as our society declines so does the substance on which sure footed men stand. It's quite easy to jump ship and get on the life rafts. It's completely different to stand and watch the rafts float away while you go down

Well then you are either willfully ignorant of the facts of history or completely stupid.
Also, regardless of the first fact, these are empty platitudes that are in no way more or less true than they are today.

Character was assassinated along with common sense.....in the mid 80s.

Yup, whats worse us seeing poor character in the workplace, always turns out bad for that person

You do know before lawyers saw such a rise in career choices your word and handshake did mean everything. Or is history just in the way for you?
