I never ruined anything. So, not all Katrina people ruined neighborhoods or cities. Drive in my ghetto neighborhood in BR and you’ll know which house is mine because we actually take care of it. Everything else is now a group home or a rental

Was it a decent neighborhood before you migrated there?

People were moving out of Monticello and Monterey and all those crap neighborhoods in the ‘90s - so that area was going downhill before Katrina. Towne Center opening didn’t help.
Most of the anchor stores were still open in 2016, so you are also pushing a false narrative of Katrina people ruining something.

Houston was headed to shitsville in many respects before Katrina.

Buy a $500,000 house or a $500 gun.
Which can you afford?

That I leave up all year.
My Baton Rouge native neighbors get really perturbed when they learn I have a masters degree from LSU, and they had to settle for southeastern bc their grades sucked.
Well, that last line was mostly my ex-sister in law and her family.

Originally you claimed it went to shite in the 90s after the Mall of LA opened in 1997
Now it was basically just humming along in 2016. Which is hilarious bullshite

But at one time there were more Salvadorans in Houston than El Salvador. So 150,000 Katrina people in a city of 2 million is really nothing

Nope. I saw shithole areas since the early 1990s.

grok:
quote:
Violent Crime Rates in Houston (1995–2015)
1995: Around 1,500 per 100,000. Houston was dealing with high crime rates in the mid-90s, driven by gang activity and economic challenges. Exact numbers are tough to pin down, but this aligns with national urban trends.
1996–1999: Likely hovered between 1,200–1,400. Crime began declining nationally due to better policing and economic growth. Houston followed suit, though it remained above national averages.
2000: Approximately 1,100 per 100,000. Data suggests a continued drop, with Houston’s murder rate around 14 per 100,000, robbery and assault making up the bulk.
2005: About 1,000 per 100,000. Houston’s murder rate was reported at 16.3 per 100,000, with violent crime still high but trending downward.
2006–2010: Roughly 900–1,100. A dip occurred mid-decade, with 2006 seeing a 12% drop in violent crime from prior years. By 2010, the murder rate was 11.8 per 100,000, ranking Houston sixth among large U.S. cities.
2011–2014: Around 800–1,000. A downward trend continued, with 2011 showing an 11% drop in total crime. Violent crime rates stabilized but saw slight upticks by 2014 (966.68 per 100,000).
2015: 966.68 per 100,000, per FBI UCR data. This was a 2.49% decrease from 2014, though murders began rising slightly, reflecting a national trend.
Notes and Trends
Data Gaps: Exact annual figures for 1995–1999 are harder to verify without direct UCR access. I’m extrapolating from national trends and Houston’s known high-crime status in the 90s.
Context: Houston’s violent crime rate was consistently above the national average (e.g., 684 per 100,000 in 1995 nationally vs. Houston’s estimated 1,500). Declines mirrored national drops, driven by policies like community policing and economic improvements.
Murder Spikes: Murders fluctuated, with notable upticks in 2005 (334 homicides) and a four-year rise through 2015.
Sources: FBI UCR data via MacroTrends provides 2015’s exact figure. Earlier years rely on partial records and Wikipedia’s summary of Houston crime trends.

Sorry you can’t google - Macys & Sears closed in 2Q 2016.
It took less than 20 years after the ‘new’ mall because that area was already in decline. Not Katrina people fault.

Every major city has shithole areas ,, that they existed inHouston prior to Katrina is not the issue
Katrina refugees put a burden on services in Houston and Harris County many of the people that were removed found themselves in a much better and safer situation in their communities compared to New Orleans while still at the same time making the overall safety of Houston worse
The bad areas became worse the ok areas became terrible and the far reaching suburbs became unsafe
I've lived here since 71, I worked in government/politics at the time I know what I'm talking about

Produce numbers then. How many Katrina people stayed in Houston more than 5-10 years. How many hundreds of thousands of illegals have moved in since Katrina?
quote:Absolutely it is. Those areas spread. Look at Atlanta. The surrounding counties have all seen crime and decay go up.

Early 2000s was like 5 years later???
What was even at Bon Marche? Because it’s ghetto over there now.
A bunch of anchor stores left Cortana in 2006 - then when the mall was sold to another company - some came back. So it had been pretty crappy before Katrina. I mean, Baton Rouge as a whole has always been pretty crappy.
