I am traveling to Isla Mujeres, Mexico soon

The snorkeling is great. Ours guides took us to a shite hole bar on the beach afterwards and they had awesome tacos.

Either sarcasm or you don't know a damned thing about Isla Mujeres. There is almost zero crime there.

We're going next spring. This island has been on my list for a while and it's time. We will do something ocean front through VRBO.

I could be mistaken, but I think that snorkeling in Isla Holbox is really good only if you take an excursion to see the whale sharks. It's probably somewhat time-of-year dependent and would be a deep water snorkel, so while amazing, maybe not the best for kids or people who get sea sick easily.

Soggy Peso is ok. We had a blast at Tiny's bar.
There was another really good bar we found that's on top of a restaurant. It's on whatever street that is in the middle of town that's shut down and covered with vendors.
They had a band and people dancing. It was where the locals hang out.

Isla Mujeres is a wonderful island that isn't well known to Americans, but very popular with French, Italian, and British tourists. Go in August simply because the foreigners are on their month long vacations at that time and there will be more super hot topless foreign women on North Beach (which is famous for being a top 10 topless beach in the Caribbean.

My wife and I have very close friends who built a home on the Caribbean side of the island close to the Mayan ruins. If you want, I can ask if they are willing to rent their house to you during the time you plan to visit. They do in fact rent their house when they aren't there, but they spend half the year there so I'm not sure of their schedule.

If you want to forego the house and stay at a top notch resort/hotel, I highly recommend:

Check out Playa la Media Luna's rates. This is a wonderful hotel with a private beach that faces the Caribbean versus the Cancun side of the island. It's only a few block away from North Beach. It's only a few blocks away from downtown.

Isla Mujeres certainly has an authentic sort of old world island feel to it, and that's because it hasn't been tainted by the over consumerism that follows an influx of American tourists. Largely the island is still unknown to Americans which is why it's incredibly affordable.

It's very easy and cheap to get to Isla Mujeres. You simply fly into Cancun International airport and then take a cab to the ferry. The ferry is about $5 per person and will escort you out to Isla Mujeres, which is a nice boat ride.

Once on the island I recommend you stay there. There's plenty to do on the island and you are far more safe on Isla Mujeres than in Cancun. The snorkeling and diving is world class. There is an awesome zip line park on the south side of the island where you can zip line over the ocean.








There is a famous artist who creates life size cement sculptures and places them on the ocean floor for divers to discover.














Isla's downtown has more French and Italian restaurants than Mexican, and once again that's because they are catering to a large French and Italian tourist base. The architecture is old world and beautiful.

Normal vehicles aren't allowed on the highways with exception (ie. delivery and cabs). Therefore, rent a golf cart to drive down the highway. It's a blast and it's very cheap!




The island has an old pirate history, so visit the pirate museum. It's actually pretty cool. Also, visit the Mayan ruins on the south side of the island.




Finally, I need to repeat this...make sure you spend quality time at North Beach. The bare boobs will be plentiful and it's just an incredibly beautiful beach.

I've actually stayed at Hotel Playa la Media Luna a few times and have done everything that I listed in my post.

Therefore, you can trust my advice from personal experience.

Isla Mujeres is truly an unknown gem of an island. The draw for my wife and I is that Isla doesn't experience a lot of American visitors which makes it feel even more exotic.

Isla's downtown is great too:

I've been but admittedly as guest with a rich dude who had his own taught so no help on charters.
Jacks on the beach is good for burgers.
Small restaurant across from Catholic Church on the southeast side of the island (forgot name) is amazing for breakfast.
Swing bar and north beach are great hang outs.
Also Rosas across from the grocery store and baseball fields has amazing authentic tacos.

I've had nothing but great experiences on Isla Mujeres.

The only thing that was subpar was one restaurant experience during my very first visit there.

My wife and I stepped off the ferry and started walking down the street to find our way to our hotel. It was hot, so we stopped at a random bar/grill located very close to the ferry pier.

My wife is very picky and instead of ordering seafood, she ordered a hamburger. NO JOKE...they brought her a sandwich that had slices of ham and a burger patty. They literally made a ham/burger sandwich. And it wasn't good.
