Based on 5 year reliability survey data, I am not sure if the difference in reliability will trump costs fr most of these.
American Standard/Trane seems to be a safe bet in terms of the cost/reliability crossover. Goodman, Rheem/Ruud and York seem to be lower reliability units. Heat pump and traditional central AC data below.

I've had Tranes for some time and always been satisfied. American Standard and Trane are the same company.

Hard to quantify something like this. All i know is we have had extreme luck with RUUD and Rheem in our business. Like i mentioned, we have a plan where if we install your unit (whichever brand you choose) we are on the hook for parts, labor, repair, callouts, etc for 5-7 years. We prefer for people to pick rheem or ruud because we have had the least amount of issues and the least amount of costs over time. Thats all i can tell you

Yes the SEER is 15-19 maybe a 21 on the upper price.

Many if not most Rheem/Ruud units have 10 year parts warranties and almost all have at least 5 year in residential service. Your company would be on the hook for labor only I would think

I can't speak for your company but most companies prefer to sell units that maximize their profits, which does take into consideration how much they have to eat for repairs. The difference in the reliability numbers that CR found in their surveys probably isn't significant enough to offset higher margins on the install. So I would think that is why a company would push Rheem but I would expect the reasoning they put out to be exactly what you are saying now.

Of course I've gotten a bit jaded in my old age.

if this were the case, we'd be pushing Carrier/Trane/AS.

No units are as good as they once were, or even close. They all suck now, relatively speaking.

Rheem/RUUD seem to suck the least

Maybe, margins are the key. Carrier thinks because they invented the modern AC, their product is worth more than it truly is. No way the percentage markup on that is as good as the others.

You're in the business so you have better access to the cost info than I would, but I suspect Rheem/Ruud have slightly higher % markups than Trane/AS. May be wrong, though.

The units all have higher SEER rating now and that has traditionally meant more breakdowns as tolerances becomes tighter and stresses are increased on units.

I really do think most of the junk that was out there has been pushed out of the traditional home AC world in the window/portable unit market. While some are better than others in the residential AC world, I dont think there is a great amount of difference between the major brands.
