always boggles my mind that some people actually think we are alone in the universe

Space is not nothing, it is either made up of or contains dark matter and the cluster has such immense gravity it is pulling on whatever that dark matter is, shifting "space". At least that's how my simple mind interpreted it.

I think of spacetime as a trampoline.

If light was a marble, and you rolled a marble across a flat trampoline at a set speed, the marble would get to the other side of the trampoline at a certain time from a certain distance.

Now imagine you put something with huge mass, let's say a bowling ball, in the middle of the trampoline. The bowling ball would stretch the fabric of the trampoline in the middle.

If you were to roll the marble again, the marble it would take a longer time to travel the same path to the other side as the space close to the bowling ball is now curved and stretched.

Dark matter isn’t the same thing as the fabric of spacetime. The lensing effect is due to gravity warping spacetime (dark matter whatever it is also has gravity and bends it as well).
