How TV has changed in 20 years...

I watched an episode of Friends last night, and this one was a flashback of all of them had their lives taken different routes.
Monica's story line (Courtney Cox) was what if she was still fat. In this episode she is in a fat suit and I had two thoughts:
1) They didn't make her up to be that fat. She looked heavier than average but not fat by today's standards or what we're used to. The way the Friends talk about her in the series, you'd swear she was 300+ lbs.
2) The show was relentless in showing her and her food addiction. Always showing her with candy bars, secret stashes of food, a plate with huge rice crispy treats that she turns away to eat, the entire cast teasing her with food. They really hammer her character on this one.
As I watched all I could think to myself was that this was (and still is) a popular show and that these jokes and this story line and this blatant portrayal of life choices that make one fat would never be shown on TV today. In 20 years we've gone from an honest (yet comedic) portrayal of obesity and food addiction on prime time TV, to fat normalizing and walking on egg shells to spare the feelings of fatties while they kill themselves. It's sad. If this exact show was written and aired today, the show would be cancelled and the network would issue an apology for hurting feelings.

Until we start canceling some TV services, nothing will change. The 5% that is offended by most of this crap is the only group making any noise.

Replace Friends and "fatties" with Married With Children and "gays" and you'll see the same results.
The Gay Mafia would have thrown a hissy fit for the ages over Al Bundy.

While at the same time slobbering over Kate Upton.

and go back to All in The Family.
That show would never air in 2018

In the show, fat Monica was smaller than Tess Holiday. Just shows how times have changed.

Archie Bunker was my granddad's hero. That Archie was supposed to be the bad guy didnt register with him.
ETA one of the bad guys. Edith was the only sympathetic character. Gloria was a bitch and Mike was a left wing mirror image of Archie.

No. It wouldn't.
It's Always Sunny had an entire season based around Mac getting fat.
No apologies and the show is still going.

Just imagine if All in the Family was remade today exactly like it was originally written. The sky screaming would be deafening.

A fat woman would have been a different deal entirely. Plus, Sunny doesn't appeal to a mainstream audience like Friends did.

That was to television what Blazing Saddles was to film. People today would be too stupid to realize its genius

A lot of people didn't back then either. Norman Lear was a dyed in the wool liberal but he called 'em like he saw them. His spinoff from all in the family, Maude, centered around a whole family of unlikeable liberal characters.

I haven't watched so I can't compare.
What made the Friends episode so curious to me was the clear line the writers made between poor food choices and obesity and the way the cast hounded her for it and even played into it. Joey brought her a plate stacked with three huge rice crispy treats that she wasted no time jumping off the couch to take from him.
You just simply wouldn't see that episode aired in 2018, and definitely not about a woman.

You should have seen TV 40 years ago. You could never have a character named spearchunker Jones today.

It was produced by a liberal (Norman Lear) who thought everyone would hate Archie and side with the meat head.
