how to set up a home office network/server/whatever

My dad is semi-retired and he wants to set up his outlook on his desktop to sync with his iPhone. He is using gmail. How can he (I) set up his computer to sync everything among his phone, gmail, and outlook? The biggest issue is that he sets appointments or makes a new contact on his phone or outlook and it doesn't sync with the other.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

There are paid solutions out there but they aren't that great IMO. His fundamental problem is that he's using three different platforms supported by three big companies that don't want people to use anything other than their own stuff.

easier with an android. just add all 3 accounts on the phone and tell google to merge the calendars into one.
eta and he needs to move to a single email for all contacts. doesnt matter which, but for his sanity; unless he wants to keep personal and work contacts separate...just move them all to one account and delete them completely from the others.
i know this firsthand..i used to keep all my contacts in my WORK EXCHANGE account and finally just moved them to my gmail account and my complexity dropped dramatically.
plus i don't want to worry about not being able to keep my contacts should i ever leave this job.
always better to keep it on a personal email (iMail, gmail, live, whatever). a little messy at first, but you can walk him through it.
if you do it right, you'll only do this once.

My dad is so computer illiterate that he would destroy an android if he tried to learn a new OS. I prefer android, but I, too, am not a 15 year old girl.
back to the original question, so do I need to tell him to cut the outlook? I think he is focused on keeping Outlook because it is one of the few programs he can easily navigate. He hates using the gmail interface online. Crap.

Try the thunderbird mail client for the PC. You can use the gmail account in an outlook like thick client. Also - don't use the gmail app on the phone, set it as a regular mail account using the pre-loaded iPhone mail client. On the calendar on the phone, remove all of the calendars that come pre loaded and only allow it to show the gmail calendar. This will get everything in sync , and the only learning curve is on the thunderbird mail client - which is a lot like outlook.

i'm as big a microsoft fanboy as anyone, but i've had a hard time getting on board with their live/online outlook system.
i'm not sure if there's an 'outlook app' on iTunes, but check that out as well.
i don't meant to slam on the iphone, just not familiar with how you'd merge accounts on it.
honestly..regarding the UI..android and iphone are very similar these days. its not like a mac UI vs Windows.
virtually every mac app is available on android and vice versa. other than just wanting to stick with apple to protect your investment in music and apps, i don't think there's much difference otherwise.
hell, you can even download icon packs that change the icons on androids home screen to look like safari, etc.
