Maybe, try to take a more active role in the day to day operations and learn other facets of the business. You have no idea how many people would love to be in this situation.

1. Your passions and interests will change over time.
2. Money isn't the most important thing, but it is AN important thing.
3. Employers pay you to do a job because you wouldn't do it if they didn't pay you. Don't count on finding fulfillment and happiness in your job. That's pretty rare.
4. Don't underestimate the value of a skilled labor job with good benefits and a retirement plan.

Let me ask you this. Is there a succession plan in place for you to gain ownership? If not I would ask for one that goes along with a plan for you to slowly assume more and more control/leadership over the next 10 years or so. Perhaps start giving you an ownership interest for certain milestones met. This would provide you with more motivation to go to work and for them to train you to do more.

Give me some more detail on this $1,600 test...
What kind of test is this?
Are you just collecting the sample or are you performing the analytical work as well?
Surely there is a standard methodology to be followed, how are you expected to know how to accurately perform this test without any training?
You make it sound like you would be throwing away your money, not their's, if something went wrong. Am I confused?

Like I said. If they will not give you a succession plan with clear goals you have to work toward/meet. I wouldn't count on getting ownership of anything.

Thread hijack, or whatever...
Roger, you had a skype interview with my son earlier today.
Crazy world.
BTW, I spent 2 summers on Kodiak. Larsen Bay, specifically.

Wow. I had a couple today and another guy in the office had a couple as well. Small world.

I spent a winter as a caretaker on a lodge across the inlet from Larson Bay.
