I don't change the oil. I change the car

I asked a taxi driver one time in Asheville, NC how often they service their vehicles. He said they just drive them until they break down and buy a new one. Asheville taxis aren't really branded or painted yellow. We were in a crappy party van.

Jesus. I run Mobil 1 synthetic which is supposed to last 10k, I never EVER go more than 5k and the oil is charred enough for me to be convinced that going longer is unhealthy for my ride. Why risk it? Oil is the blood of your car, and a 40 dollar oil change can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars down the road.

Right now she is 500 miles over their recommended change and freaking out about ruining her vehicle.
I just go by the owners manual - both of my vehicles (v8 yotas) say 5,000 - 5 minute oil change on Coursey writes 5,000 on their little sticker. Nice looking puppy.

Like everyone said, while under warranty you follow the manufacturer instructions. As to what really happens to your engine, Consumer Reports did their famous oil test on NYC taxis and found:

quote:

Even in the severe driving conditions that a New York City taxi endures, we noted no benefit from changing the oil every 3,000 miles rather than every 6,000. If your driving falls into the "normal" service category, changing the oil every 7,500 miles (or at the automaker's suggested intervals) should certainly provide adequate protection. (We recommend changing the oil filter with each oil change.)
