re: How much of a hit, if any, has the camera industry taken?

Don't know much about cameras, but I know photographers have taken a hit. I have a buddy who does it professionally and was telling me how it's been getting less and less lucrative every year.

...and there is still a place for film cameras as that has actually started coming back as moreso of a niche market. Digital literally cannibalized the film industry. Phones started doing a number on the cheaper point and shoot digitals. However, a quality photo will still require a good DSLR or a medium to large format film camera.

It's a fact. Every chick with an entry level DSLR, and basic knowledge of Photoshop is ruining the industry. Most have no technical skills at all, and can't use a camera in manual mode. Yet they have friends getting married, graduating or whatever, and charge next to nothing.

Phones killed the point & shoots. Even when the resolution and quality of the p&s cameras were superior to phones, the market for them tanked.

In some ways phone cameras and editing software have helped the higher end DSLR and mirrorless market. People are taking more pictures and getting into photography because of the easy access of their camera phone, but are often unhappy with some of the results.

They want better pictures for certain occasions or to expand their photography hobby, so they pony up for a nice camera. It helps that they don’t need budget for a small, convenient point & shoot also.

Visited a photo gallery in Asheville, NC, and there was a display with real film photography and developed photographic paper. When you see it side by side with the digital stuff, it is definitely a higher quality. Rich, full images, even in black and white.
