How important is it going to be for a kid born in 2018 to learn coding?

I say, it's parenting negligence not to get your kid educated in coding computers.

How’s coding going to help my kid turn a wrench?

1. Coding is like farming. 1% or less of the population creates what 99% consumes.

2. The majority of code being written right now is being written in languages that didn't exist 20 years ago so learning anything as a child will probably be obsolete by the time the kid is grown

What do you mean "coding computers"? Just brushing up on Excel formulas will set you apart from 90% of the workforce. And software is becoming less dependent on actual code monkeys. AI, machine learning etc. are gonna to reduce a lot of software authoring to simple point-and-click, drag-and-drop kinda stuff. Some BI tools already do this to appreciable extents.

You do realize that whatever you teach your child today will be all but irrelevant by the time they are old enough to use it?

I really was the man at pascal......

Basic coding isn't really that difficult either, and very rewarding.

Coding will be drastically different in 15-20 years... But never hurts to be a tech person as opposed to a laborer or creator.

No way I'm setting my kid up to get beat down by other kids.

People that think this way are thinking of object oriented programmers that are a dime a dozen.

There is a very wide world of IT "coders" out there. Learn SQL, it's been around for a long time. It's not going anywhere for a long time.

Every company has vast amounts of data, every company wants to leverage that data.

I think it’s important.

More important than learning French or German in the US for most people.

This is just straight up wrong. Java, Python, SQL PHP, and Javascript existed 20 years ago. Unless there is some other language that is dominating that I don't know about.

So much of coding is learning how to do it, languages are mostly just syntax. So even if in 20 years the languages are all different it won't matter that much.

Ruby on Rails is gaining traction but not entirely mainstream atm.
