Wound up being heating element. Coils were a nice solid black. You weren't kidding about the flare-up when you first turn it on. Thanks

Of all the dryer repairs I've had on my dryers over the last 45 years or so, The heating element has been the issue as often as all the others combined.

It's a specific type of wire that gets very hot, then cools, over and over again. Which causes the wire to become more and more brittle as time goes by. Then eventually breaks.
