I just started learning around Christmas. I know all the essential chords. However, my pick always slips out of my fingers, I often miss strings when strumming, I can’t change chords while strumming, and I feel like I’ve gotten nowhere. I’m getting a little frustrated (I know I have to be patient), but if anyone could tell me from experience, how good should I be at playing guitar after a month (about 4-5 hours a week)?

Edit: Forgot to mention it’s an acoustic guitar

Guitar = Golf.

Do you play golf?

Obviously not the same skill sets but to me the learning curve is the same.

I'm with this guy! I can tell you more than you want to know about amps and equipment though.

Don't compare yourself to others, it'll drive you nuts.

You should be able to play all of Smells Like Teen Spirit by now minus the solo (which is fairly easy too)

Probably as good as Eric Clapton. If you're not that good after a month, give it up.

Probably the best piece of advice that will come from this thread. I have been playing for 25 years and still learning.

Tremolo picking and palm muting.

Learn to play to blast beats and develop a love for double bass drums.

Always remember that.

I’ve been playing over 50 years, not professionally, and still learning.
Even though I might wish I could play like someone, I never compare myself to them.
I know I’ll never play like the Joe Bonamassas, Eric Claptons, Tommy Emmanuels.
Reality set in years ago. Enjoy the moment . It should never be a burden, it should be something that gives you pleasure. There’s a saying “Rome wasn’t built it a day”.
Enjoy the ride!

Ya either got it or ya don't, but even if you don't, you can still enjoy it.

This kid has only been playing since 7 and he's maybe 10 or 11 now.

My 13 year old son already plays drums (5 years. Reads and plays written trap set sheet music) and also plays trumpet (3 years, reads and plays sheet music) and took up the bass guitar just one month and a half ago, taking a weekly, private 30 minute lesson. He's already doing well enough that the band director at his school asked him to perform with the jazz/swing band after auditioning for the tole.

If you have the aptitude, and can read the music, you can probably pick it up pretty fast.

This made feel better about my guitar skills but much worse about my golf skills
