Can't click the link, but this has to be driven by housing prices, right? I mean, a loaf of bread is comparable across the country.

Gas, milk, eggs, liquor, and local taxes, off the top of my head, vary wildly between states.

Yeah, states are too broad and varying between metro areas. Should have used metro areas instead of states.

This is VERY dumb to do this by state and not city.
I could live like a king in Bumfrick, Tennessee for half my current salary, but need twice what I make to afford family sized housing in Nashville city limits.

Yep. It's amplified even more on the coasts (CA, WA, DC, NY,etc..)
Northern VA is expensive as frick and is basically South DC in terms of population (liberals) and cost of living.
Go an hour or more South to Central/South VA and it's rebel flags and 200K mcmansions everywhere

Also, this. I live about 45 mins from Seattle (Tacoma) and my COL is significantly lower.
