I am assuming you are from Louisiana. I am also assuming it is a state, not federal, charge. First, you get credit for time served awaiting trial. Secondly, depending on the charge you get sentenced to, you can get as many as 2.2 days of good time for every one day served. DOC has a big computer that figures it all out and gives to prisoners what they refer to as a "rap sheet" (although it is not what law enforcement refers to as a rap sheet). The jailer follows the DOC calculations unless an objection is filed.

There are also lots of programs those incarcerated can participate in to reduce their sentence, like getting a GED, etc.

Kill your wife or husband, six months. Kill a dope dealer, life without parole.

When does "good behavior" apply?

depends on the type of charge (misdemeanor, felony, sex crime, crime of violence, etc), type of sentence (is there a mandatory/WOB sentence?), type of incarceration (DOC v. parish), and jurisdiction (federal v. 50 states)

in LA for a felony that isn't a crime of violence or sex crime, you do about 1/3 of your sentence via "good time"
