agreed! I've never mastered painting edges freehand (I think the pros call it cutting in or something like that), but I got one of those straight-edge thingies and it works well for me

this except for certain conditions. Get a good quality angled brush. You will realize taping is mostly a waste of time.

However, one other thing you can do with tape is wet it. Let the water soak in a bit, but cutting it and pulling sooner are the main methods.

pull really slowly, and at the first sign of peeling, cut with a knife. You couldn't figure that out?

Everything everyone else has said is good advice. But the real secret is to not slather a bunch of paint on the tape in the first place. If you're painting 1/2 or 2/3rds of your tape, you're screwing up.

Just paint everything the same color including the ceiling and floor.

The quality of the brush is definitely a factor in how straight you are able to paint.

I basically did this in a house I just built. All different shades of white.
