How do you handle a mentor/hero letting you down?
Posted by JabarkusRussell on 3/30/18 at 11:48 pm015
Recently I had a relationship with someone who was a real role model and someone I held on a pedastal end. I do what I do for a living because of this person. They did something that many would consider betrayal but I still forgive. However, they made it clear that there is no chance to remedy. Anyone have similar experiences and if so, how did you overcome it?

Humans are flawed individuals. No matter how high you hold somebody on the pedestal, they will always let you down in one way or another. What matters is if the person is genuinely trying to do good. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Look at Abraham or Jacob from the Bible. They were two flawed individuals, they made mistakes. But they never broke their covenant with God. Or, if you don’t believe in God, they missed the mark but they never did that while trying to do evil.
It kind of depends on the transgression from a man to man standpoint though.

I don't know what a "pedestal end" is.

They did something that many would consider betrayal but I still forgive
And that is why they're your mentor instead of vice-versa.

Realize that humans are flawed, and he didn’t put himself on that pedestal. You did.
Voice your opinion, accept his response. Move on. Whatever he did almost certainly isn’t awful enough to wipe away all the good that he’s done for you or truth he’s spoken into your life.

9/10 responses here will be vitriolic spew from folks who have built up defenses by neglecting anything which contains emotional depth.
That being said, it's tough. I had a mentor, they were actually family, who made a decision that really destroyed a family. It hurt me to the core, and I have just now started to heal from it.
I suppose for me it allowed me to see that if this person could fall so mightily, so could I. It has forced me to realize that my flesh (Christian term for the Id) can control me if I let it, and it will take me to bad places. I must combat it with good and with what I believe to be the Holy Spirit (the subconscious which little kids basically live in).
In the end Grace is needed for all of us, Grace with one another, Grace from God, Grace covers a multitude of sins. Forgive them as quickly as you can, as they are just a human being like you and I.

Yes, I found out that my sensei ran away when some middle aged dude called his bluff during a dispute over a parking spot at Wal Mart. Sensei tried to play it off by saying he saved the other dude from a world of pain, but the reality was sensei started it and the other dude was going to finish it.

I learned a long time ago, the only place to find a role model, is in a mirror.
