If she is getting check from Vermont then wiring money through Nigeria then it's a typical scam that has been around since before the internet. The check takes several weeks to get returned from the issuing bank but the wired money is instant. So she'll be on the hook for all the money. Archaic bank laws. She is actually criminally liable for all that money to the bank.

Just found out a family member has been sending money $500 at a time to Lagos.
If you think it is a Yahoo boy then you show her all the info about them. If you are sending money to Lago you are almost certainly getting scammed.
You might try showing her the last episode of the Weekly on FX.

Yep. I was told it's not my business.
I feel like I was talking to a drug addict.

They send cash and a check. Like 200 cash the rest check. It's odd as hell.
I guess I'll have to get her family all involved and do an intervention. I want to just laugh at them and call them stupid.

Get the pics the catfish scammer is using and show her the pics belong to someone else by running them thru tinyeye or some other photo search site

I just watched the NYT show on FX about this. They call them Yahoo boys.
Husband ended up killing the wife and her elderly dad in FL because she sent over 30k

If the scammer is using Facebook reverse search the pictures and you will likely find them all over the place.

People who are too stupid to see shite like this is a blatant scam are too stupid to be helped and should just live in the misery they create for themselves.

Listen to the podcast "The Perfect Scam".
Here is a link that provides more information.
LINK
Frank Abagnale is on it. If anyone has watched the movie "Catch Me If You Can", its about his life when he was younger (late teens, early 20s). He ends up working undercover for the FBI.
Anyway, the podcast is sponsored by AARP since a lot of scams target older people, but if you look through the list of podcast there actually might be one specifically about the scam your family member is involved in.. Or one similar to it.
In fact, if you look on itunes, spodify or wherever you listen to podcast, there is one on this podcast called "Scammed Drained The Life Out Of Our Mom". That might be one that is similar to what's going on here.
These people would call and talk this old woman all the time and they convinced her to send money to them every so often. It got to the point where she thought they were her friends and they convinced her to go buy them gold watches.
But that guy Frank Abagnale gives tips on how to deal with this from all ends.

Tell them they are being scammed. If they continue that's on them.
I warned them.

She can end up with a felony over that shite. I know an idiot who ended up with a felony for doing exactly this kind of shite. She can quickly go from victim to felon and will have to pay the money back to the bank.
Jeez, i hate hearing that people are still this stupid.

Give your family member my address and tell her this is the new address to send the money, then you and I can split it 50/50
