We use Outlook. Your problem sounds like your coworkers are morons who don't know that they shouldn't invite everyone to their individual calendar events. In fact, you really don't have to share the calendar at all to see when someone is busy or free.

We have a shared calendar. No invites just meetings, financial reviews, project reviews, out of office.

By creating 100's of fake events with reminders and inviting everyone in the address book to drown out the stupid fricking video calls and/or meetings that are just a waste of time.
