Just got back from a few years in China.

They use pinyin which is a Roman alphabetic letter system like we use. So, on the computer or on their phones, they type a few of the letters to spell the word they are looking for, then a menu pops up (kind of like predictive text) which shows some suggested traditional characters to choose from, and they then click to select the intended word.

So yeah, all day it's letter, letter, letter select word. Rinse and repeat.

Still doesn't explain how you type without an alphabet. I know pinyin exists, but I doubt that's how their internet looks.

Perhaps keyboards with pictograph options that can be combined to make the appropriate symbol? I really don't know.

A lot of Chinese "words" are made of smaller components just like words words in alphabetic languages.

There's a YouTube video where they teach you 40 words in 5 minutes, and the symbols are based on 8 underlying drawings.

So maybe the keyboard is a bunch of symbols that can be combined into words?

The one I saw was like that. That's what my post was about. I saw that on a computer- can't remember what kind, but I believe it was running Windows.

Someone else said that they can type in Pinyin (i.e. the Latin alphabet) and they get a predictive text engine that lets them pick the actual character. Could be, but you'd have to know how Chinese is Romanized into Pinyin to do it that way.
