How can you protect your car's paint after the clear coat fails? Anything to worry about?

I don't know much about cars, but the clear coat is failing on it. It has been parked in the sun every day for almost 8 years (no way to avoid it). The roof is starting to turn white.
Once the clear coat goes, aside from looking like crap, is there any threat to the car's long term health?
And yes, I've neglected the exterior big time. I wash it maybe once a year.

If it's in that bad of shape, I'd buy some cheap arse clearcoat in an aerosol can from Autozone and spray it on the affected area. May slow further oxidization/paint flake/rust.

If there is nothing to worry about in terms of the exterior rusting away or literally falling apart, then I don't care. It is my 100,000 mile commuter car that I drive from the suburbs into work each day. It has a lot of life left in it, but I'm not too concerned if the exterior looks bad.
It isn't flaking off. It is just milky white.

The paint needs to be cleaned(probably) and polished. You can do this yourself or bring it to a professional. This will bring the paint back from the dead.
After that, just glaze and wax the car. It will not be perfect, but there will be a noticeable difference. Do this regularly. It is good practice, especially for cars that spend lots of time in the sun to be waxed to protect the paint.

So, you rely on this car for your daily commute, but you do not care enough to wash it more than "maybe" one time per year?
Not much to worry about except for eventual breakdown of the paint which will lead to rust followed by water intrusion.

The interior is clean and the engine is maintained regularly.
What can I say? Nobody is perfect.
