The prof used hyperbole, which conservatives and liberals use on a daily basis now. But his point that it is very, very difficult to come out as gay is still true mainly because of the strong conservative/christian bent of many families and of people in most of the country. If you live in a city, being gay is accepted on a wide spread basis, but get out into the more rural areas and you will go through hell if people including your family know you are gay.

Even still, a lot of people are accepting of gays until it’s their kid. It’s all fine and dandy until Jr comes home with a boyfriend and now it’s a part of your life. Sucks.

I would bet that the men who served in Iraq (even the gay ones) would disagree.
Not to mention that the people shooting at you in Iraq would toss your gay arse off a roof if they had the opportunity.

While this doesnt sound farfetched, there's no way you wouldnt be able to find them online. You must have the name wrong or something.
ETA: Loyola has a Women's Studies program but no professor by that name. Don't see a Gender studies program on the website.

coming out as gay in 2018 is even more brave than serving on the first line in Iraq.
Really? Then here's a solution:
Send all the gays to the front lines in Iraq, and bring our soldiers home.
It's a win-win.

some guy who is apparently well known gender studies professor named Dr. Cullen O'Bryant
How come the name doesn't come up on Loyola's website? The only hit for a last name of O'Bryant is for a girl on the cross-country team.
What was the name of the fundraiser by chance? Maybe they have an online program which would have a speaker list. There were no fundraisers listed on Loyola's calendar, so it wasn't a Loyola sponsored event. Or at least, it didn't have fundraiser in the title. Similarly there weren't any hits for synonymous terms like "benefit" either.
We should really get to the bottom of this. I did some public record searches, and the only hit came from a man who lives in Danielson, GA. There are plenty of Cullen O'Briens and variations, but combing through those to find the cross-section of homosexuals (presumably) and Ph.D's should be an easy, if not completely tedious task. We will get this guy for daring to have an opinion and for daring to use a rhetorical device which upset you. Hang in there.

Well it’s never been easier to be gay than now so that makes no sense.

There is nothing brave or courageous about coming out as gay in 2018. It hasn't been in a long time.
I came out in the early 2000's as gay. While it was a personally stressful time, I wouldn't describe the act as "brave."
Now, living life today as a gay conservative and Trump supporter -- that's courage.

You did Not state the situation correctly.
He didn't honor for preference.
He said: " publicly stating you are not compliant with biblical restrictions in country whose leading officials can get votes by making trouble for you, and hiring supervisors may ignore you and drunk baws rough you up is a brave act, all alone in your town, is braver than going into battle with superior force.

So far 14 homosexuals downvotes.

A recent episode of Silicon Valley was about a gay Christian being outed... as Christian.

Because it's all largely fabricated and admitting it would taint all of these sweet upvotes. People will believe anything they read.

I guess step one to making an outlandish claim is to pick something that can't possibly be really quantified.
You kind of can quantify this.
How many soldiers died in Iraq (including non-Americans)?
How many gays have been killed since 2003?
