I agree. JFK and ATL are crazy strict, comparatively.

I feel like every time I fly out of JFK the scanner things there's something in my pocket and I get sent to secondary clearance

There's an easy explanation for this. It's so cheap now to fly that flying isn't a luxury anymore.

If you pay luxury prices today you'll be treated that same way.

For instance back in 1975 it would cost you roughly $3200 (adjusted for inflation) one way from NYC to London.

Today you can get that fare for less than a third of that price.

You’re right. It’s a lot less expensive, but honestly, food isn’t that big of a ticket item, and clearly, treating your customers like valued assets doesn’t cost a damn thing. Like a lot of things in this world of ours, I think businesses have lost sight of that over the years. It’s only the bottom line, and that’s all it is now. That’s as much in Airlines as it is at most stores you shop at.

For one? That's high as shite.

I'm flying to DAL-SFO in 2 weeks for $240 a person. Virgin/Alaskan.

Scanner service is Clear. It's only at select airports. It's much more expensive ($295 for one year). Basically, it allows you to move to directly to the point of having your boarding pass. It comes free with certain credit cards and certain airline status levels, but the usefulness varies. I fly a few times weekly, and I don't think it's worth it, but YMMV

You can get a free month with Clear. At the end of the month they will automatically charge your credit card. Call before the month is out and say you want to cancel. They will offer you a discounted rate of 50 percent to stay a member.

Truth.

But again I think that's just the nature of having a product you know everyone will use, at prices everyone can afford. Most everybody flies this day and age, and most buy their ticket based on price more than anything else.

If you pay luxury prices for business or 1st class, which is basically what you would've payed back in the day for a regular ticket, you'll get exponentially better service.

It's like a Carnival cruise compared to other cruise lines. Cruises used to be this luxury trip only some people could afford. Carnival changed the game and made it affordable for everyone, but at a detriment. With shitty clientele comes shitty service. If you want a better experience pay more to go on a better cruise line.

The market will decide in the long run though, businesses with better customer service (all things being equal) standout and those are the ones that survive.

I have trouble understanding the appeal of a "budget" cruise.

I fly for work, but I almost always wear black leggings and a plain vneck for flying. I’m not wearing my dress and heels to be squashed between fatasses. Probably makes me look like a college kid traveling home rather than on business, but that’s fine by me.

It's called vacation. In the summer, I'm wearing basketball, shorts, and flip flops. Flying down to NOLA this summer with my wife to see her family and visit some friends and that's what I'll be dressed like. In the winter, I'll wear casual pants and a fleece jacket, maybe more depending on how cold it is.

It also depends when you bought the ticket. Buying a ticket months in advance compared to buying a ticket the day before has a big change in price.

Presentable and clean is all id say. I don't mind if people want to be comfortable, but I remember as a kid being nicely dressed on flights

Times change. Looks at old photos from baseball games in the 20s and 30s. All of the men are in coat and tie and hats.

And even if you did, WGAF? When I'm flying I want to be comfortable dammit. I'm not gonna throw on some business casual just to impress the geriatrics that happen to be on my flight.

People treat you better if you present a squared away appearance. Two guys, one wearing a polo and khakis, the other wearing Affliction. Which one is more likely to get dragged off the plane and tazed?

Because you're an adult. You ought to dress like it.

In your little hagiography of yesteryear, you forgot to mention it used to be 2-4X more expensive to fly.

You probably aren’t getting scrambled eggs and biscuits on a plane anymore, but you can still get a comfortable experience if you’re willing to pay out the arse for it. It all boils down to money. The airlines/airports are cheap don’t want to pay a little more money to hire better, more friendly employees, or provide amenities to Coach passengers.

Flying today is radically cheaper than it used to be.

Flew on a domestic India airline several years ago called SpiceJet. The british pilot came on the horn and kept referring to the stewardesses as "Spice Girls." They looked as though they had to meet certain standards.

This x1000. It was a status of the wealthy, now its cheaper than driving. We flew non stop on SW to LA round trip for 450 bucks, which meant i used 45000 pts for tix with my companion pass.

No way I could have flown round cheap that cheap back in the 70's

Jesus, never seen so many whiny poors in my life. If you want amenities and to be away from the peasants then just book 1st class and stfu already. I prefer to timeshare a Citation with a group of fellow ballers, but hey, to each his own.

Because I'm spending a few hundred dollars on a flight, not taking a greyhound bus.

Like I said above, as long as you look presentable and clean, I don't care.

Basketball shorts and a T-shirt, sure, as long as it doesn't have stains or isn't 5 years old and faded/tattered.

You realize those people spent a few hundred on the flight as well, right?
