If you find a property you are interested in, you can look up the tax history here...

Agreed.
Unlike income taxes you can go to a lesser valued home or choose to live in an area with less taxes.

For tax rates, $2,500 per $100k of house is a good rule of thumb for the established areas... $3,000 per $100k for places with MUDs, as explained above.
If this is your primary residence (homestead) you're only taxed on 80% of the home's value.
With most mortgages you're escrowing it every month, so it's not like you get caught by surprise with a monster bill every year.
As much as I dislike paying my property taxes, I do like the option that I have control over it (unlike state income tax). I could sell, move to a $150k house and hold on to a lot more of my money.

Also don't forget to factor in potential HOA dues if you're in a community with one. Could add $100 or so a month to your expenses. Also extra money for the gas and extra car maintenance due to mileage unless you're also working out on the north side.

Somebody correct me, but I think I heard 8-9% tak hike was proposed to pay for Harvey?
You are incorrect. They are not thinking about raising property tax to 8-9%. That be 3x or 4x most places in Harris county. That's $27,000 in property tax on a $300,000 home.

Taxes aren’t terrible probably about 4-6k a year. What hurts are some of the HOA fees. They range anywhere from 100-2000 a year.

As said, it's not like you aren't paying property tax now even though you are renting. It's included in your rent is all. That goes for anywhere you live.
