Article published in The Morning Advocate, Baton Rouge, La., Fri., October 27, 1961, page one.

“Senator Wilkinson Dies Here”
State Sen. Horace Wilkinson, III of Port Allen, 48, died Thursday at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, after suffering a stroke during a speech here. A native and resident of Port Allen, Wilkinson had been an active force in Louisiana politics for a number of years. He served as a member of West Baton Rouge Parish police jury for 12 years, was a state senator from 1952 to 1956 and was re-elected in 1960.

Wilkinson was an alumnus of LSU and received his degree in agriculture in 1936. he was named to the LSU Board of Supervisors in 1959.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the American Sugar Cane League, the National Cattleman's Association and Sigma Nu fraternity.
Both Wilkinson's father and grandfather, Horace Wilkinson, Jr. and Horace Wilkinson, both had served previously on the LSU board. Horace III was still on the board at the time of his death.

As a student at the university, Wilkinson was a three-sport athlete, participating in football, track and basketball. He was an ardent follower of LSU athletic events and was a prominent alumnus supporter of the university.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Scales, of New Orleans and four sons, Huber, an LSU School of Agriculture graduate; Horace IV, present student morale commissioner at LSU; Bobby and Barry, both Port Allen High School students. He leaves also two brothers, Chauvin and M.H. “Bill” Wilkinson; a sister, Mrs. Helen Laws; and two half sisters, Julia Ann and Eva Marie Wilkinson.

He and Mrs. Wilkinson were married on July 12, 1938 in New Orleans.
