Hong Kong & Macau have similar histories with both being European colonies( Britain & Portugal) Not Democracies , but both colonies were extended some freedoms: Speech , Press , independent judiciary , etc........Since the handover Hong Kong has resisted Beijing . They have had near annual protests & 2 major protests in 2014 & 2019. But sentiment from Maucau has been mostly mostly Beijing friendly since the 1999 handover. China likes to point to Maucau as the great example of their " One China , Two Systems " Policy.

Why such different attitudes toward Beijing from these 2 regions with such similar histories? Why has there been no protests in Maucau or strong support of Hong Kong there?

I've simply thought the Maucau vs Hong Kong difference is fascinating . Considering their similar histories.

I unfortunately thought someone here would have some insight . Carry on with your LeBron obsession.

Eh, the public's attention span is about 6 seconds.

He'll be interjecting himself in the next social issue in under a month.

Probably has something to do with Macau being one of the wealthiest cities in the world

This unfortunately is one of the main ,but not only reasons: GDP per capita rose from a modest $14,000 in 1999 ( under Portugal) to roughly $115,000 under China since.

Gettkng "Fat" & content from the Gambling wealth is certainly a huge part of it.

Other theories

1)Britian totally crushed the Pro Beijing/ Communist protest in Hong Kong 1967. Pro Beijing elements never got a strong foothold in Hong Kong govenrments. Portugal however made concessions with their Pro Beijing element so China had slowly infiltrated Maucau politics.

2)Maucau never having a strong self identity. Maucauans have always viewed themselves as Chinese unlike many "Hong Kongers"

It's always fascinated me the 2 different attitudes. Maybe the Hong Kong protests may finally wake up Maucau?
