Kids should not have to spend all evening doing homework after spending all day at school

We had this problem with our daughter. We decided to hire a tutor for her and now she's finishing her homework in a reasonable time. Her problem was that she said that the way they were teaching concepts in the class was different (common core shite) from what we were showing her at home. So, we decided on getting a tutor that was versed in how they were teaching the concepts in the class.

I'm not saying this would work for your situation, but it definitely helped my daughter.

Not counting a job. I would work everyday after school from 4-10 (school got out at 3).

I also worked most everyday after school and still managed to get all my homework done and keep good grades in school. But that was high school. I don't remember a huge amount of homework in elementary school, that just seems excessive. (I mean we had homework but nothing that took more than an hour a night if even that).

Soo 8 hours of school, 2 hours of practice, and 3 hours of study time comes to 13 hours of school stuff in one day.

But a 13 hour day is ok for the teachers?

research does not support a correlation between more homework and better standardized test scores. Not sure if there's research showing more homework gets kids into better colleges or helps them earn more money.

Maybe if your kid paid attention in class you wouldn't have to re-teach it every night?

Just a thought.

So? Nothing wrong with teaching you own child for one hour a night.

Everything your boss asks you to do doesn't correlate to increased earnings or promotions....you just do it, it is your responsibility. Homework is no different. Spend less time bitching and more time doing and it would be fine quicker

If I wanted to teach my own kids I'd homeschool.

Then tell the little day dreamers to start paying attention at school. It's not hard.

Even when I had homework in elementary school my parents didn't have to sit there with me to help me complete it. I was able to do it on my own, even math problems. And still make straight A's(didn't make my first B in school until I was in 7th grade).

And that was in .....wait for it......public school(gifted program though).

Really dumb post. Anyway, why don't you talk to your child's teachers? He/she may be having difficulty with the material or time management issues. It's not necessarily the teacher

I once scheduled a conference about why my son was having hours of homework every night. The teachers all agreed it was because he was reading in class instead of using the time to do his work. Quit letting him take books and he barely had any. I felt like an idiot

And the kid should be learning during the day. Homework is to practice and reinforce. Unless the child isn't smart or not paying attention, you shouldn't have to "teach" them

I did homework on the bus as well. Great time management skills if you ask me

I couldn't play with neighbors outside until my homework was done. So that meant doing what I could on the bus, getting home and doing the rest while having a snack so I could still have time to play before it got dark.

no kg should have an hour of hw on any night ...

hw is a crutch for many teachers ... provides grades and the ability to say "prove you'll do some work" ... math and english might need hw every night, but that's it ... and that shouldn't be over an hr for middle school to high school ...
